This iconic 1893 wooden powerhouse sits like a postcard on the Crystal River, accessible only by 4WD via the rough Crystal River Road. The mill powered the nearby Sheep Mountain Tunnel silver mine until 1917. Photography is spectacular year-round, but autumn aspen shots make this place legendary among landscape shooters.
Access requires high-clearance 4WD and decent driving skills — the road crosses the river multiple times and gets sketchy after snowmelt. No camping at the mill itself, but dispersed spots exist upstream. Private property, so respect boundaries and pack out everything.
