This 7,000-acre preserve protects a slice of high desert between the San Bernardino Mountains and Mojave Desert. Multiple trails wind through desert washes leading to hidden fan palm oases and seasonal pools. The main trail follows Pipes Wash for several miles, with decent shade from mesquite and desert willow. Small parking area with vault toilets but no water.
Located on Pipes Canyon Road off Highway 62, about 15 miles west of Yucca Valley. The access road is graded dirt for the last mile. Best hiking is fall through spring when temperatures are manageable. Rattlesnakes are common in warmer months, and flash flood potential exists in the washes.
