Thunder Basin National Grassland Pumpkin Buttes Dispersed Area
Wide open grassland camping scattered around the base of Pumpkin Buttes, a pair of distinctive sandstone formations rising from the Wyoming prairie. Sites are wherever you can find level ground with decent drainage — no formal spots, just pick your view. Capacity is essentially unlimited given the open terrain, but most folks cluster within a half-mile of the buttes for windbreak and scenery. No shade except your own rig, but the buttes block prevailing wind from the west.
Access via county roads from Highway 59 — mostly good gravel but can get slick when wet. No facilities whatsoever, so bring everything including water. Best in shoulder seasons when the wind dies down. Popular with hunters in fall, nearly empty in winter.
