BLM Roan Plateau Dispersed Area
A sprawling high-altitude dispersed area across rolling plateau country dotted with aspen groves and seasonal wildflower meadows. Sites scattered along old mining roads offer commanding views across western Colorado’s book cliffs. Popular during aspen season when the hillsides turn gold, but spectacular wildflower displays in July make it worth the rough drive. Elevation keeps it cool even in summer heat.
Access requires high-clearance vehicle on steep, rocky switchbacks — the final approach gains 2,000 feet in four miles. Snow closes access typically November through April. No water sources; pack everything in. Weather can change fast at this elevation — afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer.
