BLM Cedar Mesa Dispersed Area
Cedar Mesa’s vast sandstone expanse offers some of Utah’s most remote dispersed camping, scattered across slickrock and pinyon-juniper country dotted with ancient ruins. Sites range from roadside spots to hidden alcoves requiring short hikes with gear. This is serious backcountry — no facilities, minimal signage, and you’re responsible for protecting irreplaceable archaeological sites. Popular base camp for exploring Grand Gulch, Fish Creek, and Owl Creek canyons.
Access via Highway 261 and Highway 95 with various dirt roads branching west. Some routes require high-clearance and route-finding skills. Road conditions vary dramatically with weather — impassable when wet. Permits required for overnight camping and day use in some areas. Check current regulations and weather before venturing out.
