BLM Calico Mountains Dispersed Area

Dispersed Camping

The Calico Mountains offer scattered camping opportunities among the same colorful volcanic formations that gave the nearby ghost town its name. Sites range from small pullouts along mining roads to larger flats that can handle multiple rigs. The terrain features red, yellow, and purple-striped hills with remnants of old mining operations scattered throughout. Clear desert skies make this prime stargazing territory, and the lack of vegetation means 360-degree views.

Access via various unmaintained roads branching off from Calico Ghost Town Road and nearby BLM routes. Most sites require 4WD or high-clearance vehicles due to rocky washes and steep grades. No water sources—bring everything you need. The area can be windy, and summer temperatures make camping uncomfortable. Winter through spring offers the best conditions.
