BLM Painted Rock Dispersed Area

Painted Rock stands as a solitary granite monolith rising 55 feet from grassland, decorated with thousands of Chumash and Yokuts petroglyphs dating back centuries. Dispersed camping spreads around the rock’s base on level grassland with scattered valley oaks providing occasional shade. Sites accommodate rigs of any size, though spring wildflower blooms may limit access to some areas. No water or facilities.

The dirt road from Highway 58 becomes impassable when wet — avoid during winter rains. This is peak wildflower country in March and April when the entire Carrizo Plain explodes in color. Summer brings extreme heat and little shade. Painted Rock itself is protected — camping is not allowed within 100 yards of the petroglyphs.
