BLM Rand Mountains Dispersed Area

Dispersed Camping

The Rand Mountains rise from the Mojave’s floor like a forgotten island, offering scattered dispersed sites among Joshua trees and volcanic outcrops. This area attracts serious desert rats seeking isolation — you might not see another camper for days. Sites work for any size rig with careful placement, and the dark skies rival Death Valley for stargazing. Old mining roads crisscross the area, some leading to abandoned diggings and mill foundations.

Access via Randsburg-Mojave Road requires attention to navigation as routes aren’t always obvious and GPS can be unreliable in the canyons. Summer temperatures make this a winter-spring destination only. Bring extra water and let someone know your plans — this is genuine backcountry with zero services for 40+ miles in any direction.
