Cerro Prieto Volcanic Field

Otherworldly landscape of dark volcanic cones, lava flows, and cinder fields stretching across the central Baja desert like Mars on Earth.

This massive volcanic field covers over 100 square miles of Baja’s central desert with dozens of perfectly formed cinder cones rising from black lava flows. The landscape looks like something from another planet – dark red and black volcanic rock contrasts sharply with the pale desert floor. Several cones can be climbed for spectacular desert views, and the area offers excellent night sky viewing with zero light pollution. The volcanic glass and cinder make for interesting geology, but watch your tires on the sharp rock.

Access roads wind between the major cones, though some are rough and rocky. The area is completely undeveloped wilderness – bring everything you need including extra water and food. GPS is essential as landmarks can be confusing among the similar-looking cones. Best photography light occurs at sunrise and sunset when the volcanic rock glows red against the desert backdrop.
