Rancho San Ignacito Water Well

Reliable ranch well with hand pump providing clean desert water for overlanders crossing Baja's central desert wasteland.

A working cattle ranch maintains this hand-pumped well that’s become a lifeline for desert crossers running low on water. The ranchers are accustomed to overlanders stopping by and will usually let you fill containers if you ask permission at the main ranch house first. Water runs clean and cold from about 40 feet down – some of the best tasting water you’ll find in this stretch of desert. A small donation or trade for canned goods is appreciated.

The ranch sits about 3 miles off the main desert track on a well-maintained dirt road. Look for the cluster of buildings and corrals in a small valley. The well house is a concrete structure with a red hand pump – hard to miss once you’re in the ranch compound. Ranch dogs will announce your arrival, but they’re friendly.
