Cochise Stronghold Campground

Remote Coronado National Forest campground tucked in granite boulder formations where Apache chief Cochise once made his stronghold.

Ten primitive sites scattered among massive granite boulders and oak trees in the heart of the Dragoon Mountains. This USFS campground sits at 5,000 feet elevation, offering cooler temps and a stark contrast to the desert below. Sites have fire rings and tables but no hookups or water. The granite formations create natural privacy between sites, and the area stays relatively quiet except during peak spring months.

Access via Ironwood Road (Forest Road 84) – a decent gravel road suitable for most vehicles. The campground connects to hiking trails that lead deeper into Cochise’s historical hideout. No host on-site, payment via iron ranger. Can get busy during wildflower season in March-April.
