Tacony Creek Park Industrial Access Road

Hidden creek valley in North Philadelphia

Easy

Tacony Creek Park preserves the last free-flowing waterway in Philadelphia, and this industrial access road follows the old coal delivery route that served the neighborhood’s defunct textile mills and rail yards. The track begins near Cheltenham Avenue and winds south through a surprisingly wild corridor, passing concrete foundations of the old Disston Saw Works and crossing Tacony Creek multiple times where the original stone ford crossings have partially collapsed. The most challenging obstacle is the washout near the defunct Pennsylvania Railroad bridge abutments, where spring floods regularly reshape the creek channel.

Easy to moderate difficulty depending on recent rains—the clay and shale surface becomes impassable when wet but handles well in dry conditions with any high-clearance vehicle. Summer offers the best creek crossing conditions, though mosquitoes can be brutal in the lower sections near Frankford Creek. This forgotten corner of Philadelphia provides surprising solitude just miles from I-95, with opportunities to explore abandoned rail infrastructure and spot urban wildlife along one of the city’s few remaining natural waterways. No permits required, but access is technically through city parkland.
