Circuito Volcánico Puna de Catamarca

World's highest active volcano region traverse.

Extreme

The Puna de Catamarca volcanic circuit threads between active fumarole fields and massive stratovolcanoes, including views of 6,891-meter Ojos del Salado, the world’s highest active volcano. This loop connects Fiambalá through the Salar de Antofalla and returns via Antofagasta de la Sierra, passing steaming vents at Laguna Verde and the otherworldly red mineral formations of Campo de Piedra Pómez. The track crosses multiple 4,500-meter passes with technical volcanic scree descents.

This route demands serious preparation and modified vehicles with low-range gearing and underbody protection. The altitude, remoteness, and technical volcanic terrain make this expert-only territory. October through March offers the most stable weather, though sudden storms can trap vehicles for days. Carry minimum 5 days food, water purification, and satellite communication. Fuel availability only in Fiambalá and Antofagasta de la Sierra means careful range planning. The payoff is Argentina’s most spectacular high-altitude volcanic landscape in complete solitude.
