Cordillera del Viento Copper Mining Heritage Circuit
Abandoned copper mine ghost road adventure
These forgotten copper mining roads snake through the Cordillera del Viento’s eastern slopes, connecting abandoned workings that once fed Chile’s economic engine. You’ll navigate washouts from decades of neglect, ford technical stream crossings where mountain runoff has reclaimed roadbeds, and climb to ghost camps at Mina El Teniente where rusted machinery still guards empty ore bins. The route follows old supply roads built in the 1940s, offering glimpses into Chile’s mining heritage while testing your rig against mountain weather and technical terrain.
Moderate to difficult depending on recent weather—spring snowmelt can turn creek crossings into serious water obstacles. Stock 4WD handles most sections, but a winch helps with washout recoveries and steep climbs to the higher workings. Run it March through May or October through November to avoid winter snow and summer thunderstorms. Bring camping gear and extra fuel—this is true backcountry with no services for 150km. The payoff is solitude, industrial archaeology, and views of the Andes that the miners lived with daily.
