Palmetto State Park Artesian Well Spring

Point of Interest

This spring-fed swamp feels like Louisiana dropped into the Texas Hill Country. Warm artesian water bubbles up year-round, creating a 240-acre wetland filled with dwarf palmettos — the only natural palm grove in Texas. The main spring pool stays around 70°F even in winter, making it a popular swimming spot. Wooden boardwalks wind through the swampland past massive cypress trees draped in Spanish moss.

The park entrance is off US 183 between Luling and Gonzales. Day-use entry gets you access to the swimming area and nature trails. The spring water eventually flows into the San Marcos River system. Best visited on weekdays when you might have the boardwalks to yourself — weekends bring families from Austin and San Antonio.
