Pacuare River Gold Mining Circuit
Gold mining circuit with Class IV river crossings
This gnarly mountain circuit follows 1930s mining roads through the Pacuare River watershed where American and German prospectors once extracted gold from quartz veins in the volcanic bedrock. The route climbs through cloud forest to the abandoned Quebrada Grande mining camp at 2,800 feet, passing rusted equipment and concrete foundations from the operation that closed in 1987. Multiple Class III-IV river crossings on the Pacuare itself require precise wheel placement and solid recovery gear.
Expert-level terrain demanding low-range 4WD with rock sliders, skid plates, and aggressive tires. Rainy season (May-November) makes this route borderline suicidal with flash flood potential. Dry season only, December through April. No services for 40+ miles — carry extra fuel, water, and full recovery kit. The payoff is spectacular whitewater views, untouched cloud forest, and genuine mining history most tourists never see.
