The Inyo National Forest ranger station serves as command center for all things Sierra Nevada on the east side. Staff here issue wilderness permits, provide current trail and weather conditions, and sell maps. The building houses displays on local geology and wildlife, plus a good selection of regional guidebooks and USGS topos.
Located right in downtown Lone Pine, this is your mandatory stop if you’re planning any backcountry travel beyond day hiking. Whitney permits are lottery-based months in advance, but walk-in permits for other wilderness areas are sometimes available. Open year-round but hours vary seasonally.
