El Potrero Chico Camping Area
This established campground sits in a dramatic limestone canyon surrounded by 1,000-foot vertical walls that draw climbers from around the world. The camping area offers basic facilities including pit toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables spread across a sandy desert floor dotted with ocotillo and agave. Sites are first-come-first-served and fill up on weekends during climbing season. Water is available but should be treated — most overlanders bring their own supply.
Access is via a well-maintained dirt road from Hidalgo, suitable for any vehicle. The area stays busy October through March when temperatures are ideal for climbing. Summer heat can be brutal, with temps over 100°F. No cell service in the canyon, but the small town of Hidalgo 30 minutes away has fuel and basic supplies.
