Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway 11 Backcountry Extension
Hidden mountain access off SC's scenic byway.
The Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway 11 serves as a launching point for a network of unmarked forest service roads that snake into the remote corners of the Blue Ridge foothills. Starting near Campbell’s Covered Bridge, a series of interconnected gravel and dirt roads climb through granite boulder fields toward Yellow Branch Falls, offering technical challenges around exposed bedrock and seasonal creek crossings. The route passes through dense hardwood forests and opens onto ridgeline views of Table Rock and Caesar’s Head in the distance.
This moderate trail requires high-clearance 4WD for rocky sections and seasonal mud holes, particularly around the waterfall approaches. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, though summer can be brutally humid in the dense canopy. No permits required, but fuel up in Pickens as services are sparse. The payoff is solitude in some of the state’s most pristine mountain terrain, with multiple waterfall access points and excellent dispersed camping opportunities along the ridgelines.
