Congaree River Bluff Archaeological Trail System

The Congaree River Bluff Archaeological Trail System follows pre-Columbian trading routes that later became colonial wagon roads and 20th-century logging tracks. These dirt and sand trails wind along 30-foot limestone bluffs overlooking the Congaree River, passing through sites where Congaree Indians established villages over 1,000 years ago. The main route connects Fort Motte Historic Site to the Congaree Bluffs Heritage Preserve, with challenging sandy sections that can bog down lighter vehicles and steep descents to river access points at Cedar Creek Landing.

This easy to moderate route requires high-clearance but can handle stock SUVs in dry conditions. Avoid during wet weather when the sandy sections become impassable soup. No permits needed, but respect archaeological sites and don’t collect artifacts. Spring and fall provide the best combination of firm trail conditions and comfortable temperatures. The reward is accessing untouched river bluffs and remnant longleaf pine forests while following paths used by traders and warriors centuries before European settlement.
