Katavi National Park Ikuu Campsite

Ikuu sits on the banks of the Katuma River in Katavi National Park, one of Tanzania’s most remote and wild places. This basic campground offers pit toilets and a water point, but brings everything else — you’re 400km from the nearest grocery store. The real show happens at dusk when hundreds of hippos emerge from the river pools just meters from your campsite. Dry season (May-October) concentrates massive herds of buffalo, elephant, and crocs along the remaining water.

Access requires 4WD and takes 5-7 hours from Mbeya on rough tracks that turn to soup during rains (November-April). No cell service, no generators after dark, no safety net. This is raw Africa — come prepared for mechanical issues and bring satellite communication. Park fees are steep but worth every shilling for the solitude.
