Congaree Creek Bluff Trail

Creek bluffs and bottomland forest remnants

Moderate

The Congaree Creek Bluff Trail traces an old logging road along the 80-foot bluffs above Congaree Creek before dropping into the bottomland hardwood forest that survived the great timber boom of the 1800s. The route passes the remnants of Myers Mill, a Civil War-era gristmill where you’ll ford the creek twice at rock ledges that become impassable during spring floods. Ancient bald cypress and tupelo gum create a cathedral canopy as you navigate between massive buttressed trunks on what locals call the “snake road” for good reason.

This moderate trail demands high-clearance 4WD for the creek crossings and muddy bottomland sections that can swallow stock vehicles. Best run in late fall through early spring when water levels drop and snakes retreat. No permits required, but bring recovery gear and check Congaree River levels before heading in. The payoff is solitude in one of South Carolina’s last intact bottomland forests and camping along bluffs that offer views across miles of untouched river swamp.
