Goosenecks State Park San Juan River Overlook
Stand at the rim and peer down into a textbook example of entrenched meanders — the San Juan River snaking through massive horseshoe bends carved into red sandstone over millions of years. The overlook sits 1,000 feet above the water, offering one of the most dramatic river views in the Southwest. Each bend is a perfect oxbow, creating a landscape that looks almost too geometric to be natural.
The park is just a few miles off Highway 261, accessible by any vehicle on paved roads. It’s a quick stop but worth the detour — especially at sunrise or sunset when the canyon walls glow. Bring water and sun protection; there’s no shade on the mesa top. The adjacent primitive campground fills up during peak season.
