Erg Chebbi Sahara Sand Dunes Morocco
Erg Chebbi is a 28-kilometer stretch of wind-sculpted sand dunes reaching 500 feet high, creating Morocco’s classic Saharan landscape. The golden sand sea rises abruptly from flat stone desert near Merzouga village. Dawn and sunset paint the dunes in deep orange and red, while midday heat creates shimmering mirages. Camel treks depart from multiple camps along the dune edge, but 4WD access allows deeper exploration into the sand sea.
The hard-packed approach roads from Merzouga are suitable for any vehicle, but entering the dunes requires experienced 4WD with sand gear. Air down to 12-15 psi minimum. Local guides available but not required for basic dune exploration. Best visited October through April when daytime temperatures stay below 100°F. Summer heat regularly exceeds 120°F.
