Lagoa dos Patos Flamingo Colony Santa Catarina
Lagoa dos Patos hosts one of South America’s most reliable flamingo viewing sites where thousands of Chilean flamingos gather to feed in the shallow salt lagoons. The birds arrive with the southern winter migrations, creating pink carpets across the water that can be observed from elevated viewing points along the eastern shore. Best viewing is early morning when the birds are most active, with binoculars recommended for close observation.
Access is via BR-471 south from Porto Alegre, then local roads to the lagoon’s edge. The viewing area requires high-clearance vehicles due to soft sand approaches, especially after rain. Flamingo numbers peak from May through September. The area can be windy and exposed, so bring layers and sun protection.
