Angel Oak Tree Johns Island
This massive Southern Live Oak has been growing on Johns Island for over 14 centuries, predating European settlement by a thousand years. The tree stands 65 feet tall with a trunk circumference of 28 feet and limbs that sprawl 187 feet across, some so heavy they rest on the ground and have rooted themselves. Thick Spanish moss drapes from every branch, creating a cathedral-like canopy that filters the Carolina sun into dappled light.
The tree sits in Angel Oak Park, a small city park with paved walkways, benches, and interpretive signs. Access is easy from any vehicle via Angel Oak Road. The park can get crowded on weekends and during peak tourist season, but early morning and late afternoon visits offer more solitude. There’s no camping here, but it makes a worthy stop when exploring the Sea Islands region south of Charleston.
