Roque Nublo Sacred Rock Tejeda

This massive basalt pillar rises from the central highlands of Gran Canaria, formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago. At 5,900 feet elevation, Roque Nublo offers panoramic views across the island and out to Tenerife on clear days. The Guanche indigenous people considered it sacred, and it remains a symbol of Canarian identity. A moderate 1.5-mile hike from the parking area leads to the base.

Access via winding mountain roads that can be challenging in rental cars but manageable for most vehicles. Weather changes quickly at altitude, so pack layers. The site gets busy with tour groups mid-day, but sunrise and sunset visits offer solitude and dramatic lighting. No facilities at the trailhead, but the town of Tejeda nearby has restaurants and supplies.
