Meteora Monastery Rock Pinnacles

Point of Interest

Six active Orthodox monasteries built atop massive sandstone and conglomerate pillars that rise 400 meters from the Thessalian Plain. These geological formations, shaped by millions of years of weathering, create a surreal landscape where 14th-century Byzantine monasteries seem to float in the air. The Great Meteoron and Varlaam monasteries are the largest, while Roussanou offers dramatic sunset views.

Accessed via the town of Kalambaka, with a winding road connecting the monasteries. Each monastery has specific visiting hours and modest dress requirements. Spring and autumn provide the best light and weather, while summer brings crowds and intense heat. The access road can be challenging for large rigs due to narrow switchbacks and limited parking at some monasteries.
