Mesa Arch Canyonlands National Park
This delicate 40-foot sandstone arch sits on the edge of a mesa cliff, creating one of the Southwest’s most photographed sunrise shots. The arch frames Washerwoman Arch and the snowcapped La Sal Mountains beyond, with golden light illuminating the underside at dawn. Expect crowds during peak seasons — photographers stake out positions before sunrise, and the small viewing area fills fast during spring and fall.
Access via a flat 0.5-mile trail from the Mesa Arch Trailhead parking area. The trail is well-marked but can be icy in winter mornings. Parking fills by 5:30 AM during peak sunrise months. No facilities at the arch itself — pack out everything and stay on designated trails to protect the fragile cryptobiotic soil.
