Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park Mata-Mata Dispersed Area
This backcountry camping area sits in the deep Kalahari along the seasonal Auob River, about 120km north of Twee Rivieren gate. Red sand campsites scattered under sparse camel thorn trees offer basic shade and fire rings, but no water or facilities — you’re completely self-sufficient here. Gemsbok, springbok, and predators move freely through camp, and night sounds carry for miles across the desert silence.
Access requires high-clearance 4WD and advance booking through SANParks. The sandy two-track from Mata-Mata rest camp can be challenging in soft conditions. Best visited April through September when temperatures are manageable — summer heat exceeds 40°C regularly. Minimum 3-day stay required.
