Simpson Desert French Line Track Dispersed Area
This historic telegraph line route cuts through towering red sand dunes and sparse desert scrub, offering primitive camping opportunities for properly equipped desert travelers. The track follows the remnants of the 1870s overland telegraph infrastructure with occasional ruins and marker posts visible. Camps are typically established in inter-dune swales with some wind protection. No facilities whatsoever — bring everything including recovery gear for sand extraction.
Accessible only by high-clearance 4WD with sand tires, recovery boards, and desert survival kit. Summer temperatures are lethal; travel restricted to cooler months. Navigation requires GPS as the track can be obscured by shifting sands. Popular with serious desert enthusiasts making the Birdsville-Dalhousie Springs crossing.
