Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge Wet Prairie Circuit

Cranes, carnivorous plants, and coastal prairie.

Easy

The Wet Prairie Circuit offers 12 miles of elevated service roads through Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge’s unique longleaf pine savanna ecosystem. This isn’t your typical muddy refuge road — elevated wooden causeways carry you across pitcher plant bogs where endangered sandhill cranes nest, while native wet prairies stretch to the horizon. The circuit includes three observation platforms connected by maintenance roads, with the crown jewel being the mile-long elevated boardwalk through the deepest bog section where Venus flytraps and sundews thrive in the acidic soil.

Easy to moderate depending on season and recent rains. Stock 4WD or high-clearance 2WD works fine on the main circuit, though some spur roads get soft during summer thunderstorm season. Best visited October through March when cranes are present and weather’s cooler. Required refuge entrance permit available at visitor center. No camping allowed, but nearby state parks offer options. Bring binoculars, camera with telephoto lens, and respect seasonal wildlife closures. Cell service decent near visitor center, fades toward backcountry.
