Chesuncook Lake Tote Road

Thoreau's wilderness highway to Maine's third-largest lake

Moderate

This 28-mile tote road cuts through the heart of Maine’s North Woods, following the same route that hauled logs to Chesuncook Lake for over a century. You’ll cross the Golden Road near Millinocket, then dive into thick forest where moose outnumber people by a wide margin. The road dead-ends at Chesuncook Lake — Maine’s third-largest lake — where Thoreau paddled in 1853 and wrote about the “primitive pine woods.” Expect deep mud holes, especially around Umbazooksus Stream crossing.

This is moderate difficulty — stock 4WD with decent ground clearance handles it, but bring a shovel for mud season. Best tackled June through October when the worst bogs firm up. No permits required, but fuel up in Millinocket as there’s nothing out here. The payoff is pristine wilderness camping along one of Maine’s most storied waterways, plus some of the state’s best moose watching at dawn and dusk.
