Dordabis Pass to Sossusvlei Via NamibRand

Hidden conservancy route to Sossusvlei

Moderate

This route cuts through the heart of the NamibRand Nature Reserve on private conservancy roads that most tourists never see. Starting from the Dordabis Pass southeast of Windhoek, you’ll navigate limestone plateaus and acacia savanna before dropping into the red sand country that defines the Namib Desert. The track passes the ruins of old German military outposts and crosses several seasonal riverbeds where oryx and springbok gather during the dry months.

Moderate difficulty with soft sand sections requiring momentum and proper tire pressure management. Any high-clearance 4WD will handle it, but recovery gear is essential for the inevitable sand trap. Best run May through October when temperatures are manageable and roads are firmer. No permits needed for the conservancy roads, but fuel up in Maltahöhe – there’s nothing between there and Sesriem. This route offers solitude and wildlife viewing that the main tourist highways can’t match.
