Tassili n’Ajjer Sahara Circuit

Stone age galleries in a sandstone cathedral.

Extreme

The Tassili n’Ajjer plateau sits like a forgotten world 1,500 meters above the Sahara, accessible only through punishing sand tracks and rocky passages that lead to one of Africa’s greatest outdoor art museums. This UNESCO World Heritage site contains over 15,000 prehistoric rock paintings and engravings scattered across a maze of sandstone canyons and natural arches, with the famous “Round Head” paintings at Jabbaren being the crown jewel. The route from Djanet follows ancient caravan paths through the Tin Merzouga sand sea before climbing onto the plateau via the treacherous Tadrart Rouge, where truck-swallowing soft sand gives way to knife-edge rock.

This is extreme-level expedition territory demanding serious preparation: GPS navigation, satellite communication, minimum two vehicles, and guides familiar with the shifting landscape. The best window is October through March when temperatures drop below furnace levels, but even then expect scorching days and freezing nights. Algerian permits and military escorts may be required depending on current security conditions. What you’ll find is raw Saharan wilderness, 8,000-year-old art that predates the pyramids, and landscapes so alien they’ve been used as Mars movie sets.
