Chukotka Abandoned Radar Station

Point of Interest

This sprawling complex of concrete bunkers and towering radar arrays dominates a windswept plateau above the Chukchi Sea. Built in the 1960s to monitor U.S. military activity across the Bering Strait, the facility was abandoned in the 1990s. Massive diesel generators, communication equipment, and living quarters remain largely intact, creating an eerie time capsule of Cold War paranoia.

Reached via a deteriorating military road from Provideniya, passable only in summer with high-clearance 4WD. The site sits in a restricted border zone — permits may be required. Weather changes rapidly, and fog can roll in within minutes. Bring warm gear even in summer.
