Rangitoto Island Forest Track
Drive to Auckland's youngest volcano summit
Rangitoto Island sits 25 minutes by ferry from Auckland, where the Department of Conservation maintains the only vehicular access to New Zealand’s youngest volcano. The gravel road winds through 600-year-old lava fields and regenerating pohutukawa forest to the 259-meter summit, passing the distinctive Rangitoto Wharf and climbing through terrain that looks more like Hawaii than typical New Zealand bush. The track crosses chunky basalt flows where native plants have slowly colonized the volcanic rock.
This is an easy family-friendly drive suitable for any vehicle, though you’ll need to take the Fullers ferry from Auckland first. The track operates year-round with DOC permits required, and the 4km summit road takes about 30 minutes each way. No camping allowed, but the 360-degree views from the top span Auckland’s harbor, the Hauraki Gulf islands, and downtown skyline — worth the ferry fare and permit cost for one of New Zealand’s most accessible volcanic experiences.
