Yakutsk Diamond Mine Overlook
The Mir Diamond Mine creates an otherworldly landscape just outside Yakutsk — a terraced pit over 500 meters deep and 1.2 kilometers wide that took decades to excavate. Now flooded and inactive, the mine remains an impressive testament to Soviet-era industrial ambition. The overlook provides dramatic views into the geometric terraces carved from permafrost, with interpretive signs explaining the mining operation that once produced some of the world’s finest diamonds.
Access requires a short drive from Yakutsk on decent gravel roads, though the final approach can be muddy during thaw season. The site is officially restricted but viewpoints exist along the perimeter road. Best visited during summer months when access roads are most reliable. Bring a camera with a wide lens — the scale is difficult to capture.
