Carrizo Plain National Monument Soda Lake Overlook
This 250,000-acre preserve stretches across the San Joaquin Valley’s largest remaining grassland, centered around the ephemeral Soda Lake. Spring transforms the plain into a carpet of wildflowers—goldfields, lupines, and owl’s clover painting the landscape when winter rains cooperate. The overlook provides sweeping views of the alkali lake bed, which fills after wet winters and evaporates into geometric salt patterns by summer.
Access via Soda Lake Road from Highway 58 involves 15 miles of graded dirt suitable for any vehicle in dry conditions. Winter rains can make roads impassable. The monument sees peak visitation during March-April wildflower season, but remains wonderfully empty most of the year. No facilities at the overlook—bring everything you need.
