Telegraph Track
Cape York's ultimate creek-crossing gauntlet.
The Telegraph Track cuts through Cape York Peninsula’s heart, following the old overland telegraph line from the 1880s through some of Australia’s most unforgiving terrain. This 80-kilometer section between Bramwell Junction and Eliot Falls throws everything at you — deep creek crossings like the infamous Gunshot Creek, steep rocky ascents, and boggy sections that’ll swallow a poorly-driven rig whole.
This is genuine expert-level driving that’ll test your vehicle and your nerve. You need a well-built 4WD with diff locks, underbody protection, snorkel, and serious recovery gear — plus someone who knows how to use it all. The track runs best in the dry season (May to September), but expect creek crossings even then. Come prepared for remote camping, carry spare parts, and pack extra water. It’s a pilgrimage for serious 4WDers — the kind of track that separates weekend warriors from real overlanders.
