Cedar Mesa Campground — Notom–Bullfrog Road, Capitol Reef National Park

Established Campground

Cedar Mesa Campground is the quiet little cousin to Fruita. It’s a handful of first-come, first-served sites (five, last I knew) tucked off the Notom–Bullfrog Road in the south district of Capitol Reef. It’s primitive: tables, grills, and a vault toilet, with no water and no hookups. The sites sit in open juniper and sage country with the long red wall of the Waterpocket Fold running alongside. Sunsets here are the kind you stop talking for. It’s free, but arrive early in spring and fall, because five sites go fast when the Burr Trail crowd is rolling through.

Fill your water in Torrey or at the Fruita area before you head south, and pack out all your trash. The road is graded dirt and fine for most rigs when dry, but it turns to slick clay after rain, and the washes can flash flood. Check conditions at the Capitol Reef visitor center before you commit. Verify site count, fees, and stay limits with the NPS ahead of time, since they change.
