Kebler Pass Summit — Aspen Grove Crest at 10,007 Feet

Point of Interest

Kebler Pass tops out at 10,007 feet on the graded county road between Crested Butte and the Highway 133 side near Paonia Reservoir. The summit isn’t a dramatic rocky saddle. It’s a broad, quiet crest buried in aspens, with the Raggeds Wilderness and the West Elk range stacked up behind. This area is known for some of the largest aspen groves in the state, and in the last week of September the whole place turns gold. Expect traffic then: leaf-peepers, photographers, and every Subaru in the valley. Midweek and early morning are your friends.

The road is gravel and generally fine for any vehicle when dry, though washboard is the rule and rain turns the clay greasy. It’s closed to wheeled traffic in winter and usually opens in late spring, so verify with Gunnison County before you commit. Pull off carefully in the designated spots and don’t churn up the grove edges. Cell service is spotty to nonexistent up here. Carry what you need, pack out your trash, and top off fuel in Crested Butte first.

Have a dirty day.
