Nevis Crossing — Nevis Valley Gold Rush Ruins Camp

Dispersed Camping

Nevis Crossing sits in the middle of the Nevis Valley, with tussock hills, the Nevis River, and the remains of the gold-mining settlement that once filled this country. It’s empty, wide open, and quiet. No facilities, no signage worth trusting, and no cell signal. Pack in everything you need, including water, and pack out every scrap of rubbish. This is a place to arrive self-sufficient and leave it better than you found it.

Nevis Road is a rough, remote 4WD route and a long way from fuel or help. The river can rise quickly after rain, and the crossings are the real crux, so check conditions before you commit. Most of the land along the road is working farmland. Camping rules vary between the conservation land and the private paddocks, so confirm with the Department of Conservation and respect every gate and stock fence you meet. Summer through early autumn is the safe window, and winter snow closes the high saddle. Verify access and camping legality ahead of time, because rules here change. Have a dirty day.
