Mann Lake — Steens Mountain East Side Primitive Lakeshore Camp
Mann Lake sits at the foot of the Steens’ east side, out where the Alvord Basin runs into the sagebrush. It’s a BLM-managed spot known for Lahontan cutthroat fishing, with primitive camping near the shore. Expect open sage flats, big sky, nothing between you and the wind, and almost no shade. Bring your own water, wood or stove, and everything you need to pack out. Facilities are minimal at best, so don’t count on them. Verify current conditions with BLM Burns District before you go.
Access is by dirt and gravel county and BLM roads, and the surface turns to greasy clay after rain. Roads out here punish a rig that is short on fuel, spares or recovery gear, so fill up in Frenchglen or Fields first. It makes a good quiet base if the Alvord Desert playa is getting crowded. The lake level swings with the seasons and the campsite is not always in the same condition, so check ahead. Have a dirty day.
