Dallas Divide

Point of Interest

Dallas Divide is the 8,970-foot summit on Highway 62 between Placerville and Ridgway. It’s the pavement bookend to Last Dollar Road, and the point where the dirt from Telluride drops you back onto asphalt. There’s no campground here and no services. What you get is a big, open sweep of ranch land with the Sneffels Range and the Cimarron Range standing up behind it. Fall is the busy season, when the aspen turns and photographers line the shoulders. Pull off only where it’s safe, because traffic moves fast.

Last Dollar Road is generally fine for a stock high-clearance rig in dry weather. After rain or snowmelt the clay turns to grease, so check conditions before you commit. Dallas Divide is also the natural place to regroup, air back up, and sort the trip out before heading down toward Ridgway for fuel and food. Winter plowing keeps the highway open, but the dirt road is a different story. Have a dirty day.
