Kebler Pass Road — Gunnison National Forest Aspen Dispersed Camping

Dispersed Camping

Kebler Pass Road (Gunnison County Road 12 / FR 12) climbs west out of Crested Butte through the largest aspen stands in Colorado. Pull-offs and established sites are spread along the Gunnison National Forest stretch of the road, and most are well worn, with fire rings already in place. It’s free, and it’s a solid basecamp for running Schofield Pass, Washington Gulch, and Gothic without burning daylight on the drive. Sites near the pass and the Lost Lake area fill up on summer weekends, and fall color in late September brings crowds. Show up midweek or early on a Thursday and you’ll find a spot.

The road is graded dirt that a stock sedan can handle in dry weather, though washboard rattles loose bolts. Expect cold nights even in July, with frost at this elevation. Stick to existing sites, pack out your trash, and check current fire restrictions with the Gunnison Ranger District before you light anything. Camping is generally limited to 14 days. Verify pass opening dates in late spring, since snow keeps the upper road closed well into May or June. Have a dirty day.
