Forte di Fenestrelle — Great Wall of Piedmont in the Val Chisone
Fenestrelle is the biggest mountain fortress in Europe and it looks like a piece of the Great Wall bolted onto the Alps. The Savoys built it from 1728 onward, and it climbs the ridge above the village in three linked forts: San Carlo at the bottom, Tre Denti, and Delle Valli at the top. A covered stairway of roughly 4,000 steps ties it all together. Guided and self-guided visits are offered, but hours, tour formats and ticket prices change by season, so verify ahead of time. Expect crowds on summer weekends and quiet midweek in shoulder season.
It sits on the Val Chisone side, down the valley from Sestriere and well below the gravel of the Assietta ridge road. It makes a good history stop before or after the run: the same Savoy-versus-French border fights that shaped the Battle of the Assietta in 1747 are why this wall exists. The approach is paved, with parking in and around the village. You don’t need a 4×4 to get here. Bring real boots if you plan to climb the full stair, because the elevation gain is serious and the fort is mostly open to the weather. Best from late spring through early autumn.
Have a dirty day.
