Factory Butte Recreation Area
Factory Butte dominates the horizon like a giant sandcastle, its layered walls rising 6,300 feet above the surrounding desert. The BLM land around its base is a free-for-all playground for ATVs, dirt bikes, and overlanders seeking solitude. Countless informal camping spots dot the area, from sheltered washes to exposed ridges with panoramic views. The butte itself offers scrambling routes to the top for those willing to work for the view.
Access is via dirt roads from Highway 24 near Caineville – follow signs for Swing Arm City OHV area. Roads vary from smooth gravel to deep sand depending on recent weather and traffic. No facilities whatsoever, so come prepared with water and supplies. The area can get busy with OHV groups on weekends, but weekdays offer genuine solitude.
