Rubicon Springs Road
Where axles go to die and legends are born
The Rubicon Springs Road isn’t just a trail — it’s a rite of passage that turns suburban mall crawlers into believers. Starting from Loon Lake, this 22-mile granite gauntlet features iconic obstacles like Little Sluice and Big Sluice, where countless differentials have met their maker against unforgiving Sierra granite. Cadillac Hill’s off-camber granite ledges will have you questioning life choices while your spotter earns their keep guiding you through lines that seem impossible until you’re through them.
This is expert-level wheeling that demands respect, preparation, and deep pockets for inevitable repairs. You’ll need heavy armor, lockers, and 35s minimum — preferably sticky compound. Trail season runs July through September, though early season can still have snow at elevation. No permits needed, but bring everything including recovery gear and a satellite communicator. The Rubicon isn’t about getting somewhere; it’s about proving you can handle what the Sierra throws at you and coming back with stories worth telling.
