Craters of the Moon National Monument

Surreal lava flows and cinder cones create an otherworldly landscape that NASA used to train Apollo astronauts.

This 750,000-acre preserve showcases one of America’s most striking volcanic landscapes. Black lava flows, spatter cones, and lava tubes stretch across the Snake River Plain, creating terrain so alien that NASA used it for Apollo mission training. The 7-mile scenic loop road accesses key features including Devil’s Orchard Trail and Indian Tunnel lava tube. Summer temperatures can exceed 100°F on the black rock.

The monument is best explored in spring and fall when temperatures are moderate. Winter brings snow but limited access beyond the visitor center. Sturdy footwear is essential — the rough lava rock (called ‘a’a’) shreds soft soles. Water is scarce; bring plenty. The Tree Molds Trail and Caves Trail require headlamps for exploring lava tubes.
